North Central Florida Job Market Update | June 2023

In June, the national unemployment rate decreased by 0.1% to 3.6%, and the number of people unemployed declined to 5,957,000. The unemployment rate was the same as in June 2022. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 5 states, decreased in 2 states, and remained unchanged in 43 states and the District of Columbia in June 2023. 

June Job Growth Among All States

  • Texas gained the most jobs (+31,100 jobs)
  • Florida gained the 15th most jobs (+5,500 jobs)
  • Indiana lost the most jobs (-13,900 jobs)

  • Texas gained the most jobs (+31,100 jobs)
  • Florida gained the 6th most jobs (+5,500 jobs)
  • Ohio gained the least jobs (+1,000 jobs)

North Central Florida Labor Numbers

In Florida, the economy continues to support job growth compared to other states. June’s unemployment rate remains at a low of 2.6%, unchanged from May’s 2023 rate and down 0.2% from June 2022. In addition, Florida’s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 10,798,000 in June 2023. The state gained 348,000 jobs over the year, an increase of 3.3%. 

Locally, in Alachua County, the labor force, or the number of individuals employed and seeking employment, in June was 144,729, while employment in the county was 140,037, compared to the April labor force of 144,061 and the employment level of 139,988. In the same month, Gainesville’s unemployment increased to 3.2%, with the employment level increasing by 4,400.
