Together, we affect change!

Career Day will take place Friday, February 28 at Horizon Center Alternative School, 9:00 a.m. – noon

CareerSource North Central Florida, Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce and local businesses are coordinating with Horizon Center Alternative School to host a second Career Day, an educational event where students will hear from more than 15 local professionals. Students will hear from business owners, human resources professionals, and community leaders on Friday, February 28 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at 2802 N.E. 8th Ave.

In November 2013, several members of the business community rallied together and held the inaugural Career Day for the students of Horizon Center Alternative School. The event was popular among students who heard from business representatives in various industries. In December 2013, the Education Foundation of Alachua County awarded the school a “Catalyst for Change” grant, in the amount of $3,548. This grant finances innovative teaching practices that focus on career and technical education, STEM education, literacy and graduation rate increases and more.

“Horizon Center and its students are evolving with the assistance of the business and educational community,” states Dr. Anntwanique Edwards, assistant principal of Horizon Center Alternative School. “Horizon Center is an educational center that provides new opportunities for success, no longer a ‘last chance’ school.”

Career Day launches the Horizon Center’s EntreEagles program, a six-week entrepreneurship training program which focuses on career/technical education and low performing students. This program also features a trip to the Cade Museum, Innovation Hub, RTI Surgical, Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator, and more. Lastly, EntreEagles will conclude with a “Shark Tank” competition, where students will pitch their ventures to local business owners, who will serve as judges for the competition in May.

“This is just the beginning of a set of skill building activities to prepare youth for the world of work,” states Edwards.
