Silicon Valley does it, Austin does it, Gainesville does IT, too!
In July 2013, FloridaWorks held its inaugural Start Up Downtown in collaboration with the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce (GACC) and Innovation Gainesville (iG). Start Up Downtown was a startup exhibition and job fair that brought job seekers, employers and those interested in the startup culture together on one balcony. The event was developed by GIT (Gainesville Information Technology), an IT taskforce assembled by FloridaWorks and GACC.
Queso Media Group, a local startup, captured the event on film. The video examines the start up community in Gainesville and three crucial components of Start Up Downtown: our emerging startup culture and jobs being created locally, the community and job seeker interest in our startup community and what makes the FloridaWorks region unique when it comes to startup culture.
In addition to the traditional job fair we all picture (table displays, name tags, etc.), local startups Grooveshark and Fracture held open houses at their offices, and HackerHouse cadets performed live demos of the products they create. HackerHouse is a live-in incubator where participants live, eat and work for three months at a time creating prototypes for commercialization.
Participating startup companies included: Grooveshark, Mobiquity, Sporting Odyssey, Partender, Styledwel, NeuroNet Learning, Eatable, Trendy Entertainment, Stage 7, Fracture, Shadow Health, OwnForce, SharpSpring, SwampMobile, Hopping 4 a Cure and Study Edge.
More than 300 people showed up to network with startups and talk about job openings. Start Up Downtown took place at the center of downtown Gainesville on the second floor balcony of Union Street Station. The event was powered by Feathr, an event networking app for iPhone OS and Android developed by a local startup of the same name. The first 150 attendees received free t-shirts with the event logo, and the planning committee collaborated with the downtown business community to offer attendees validated parking and restaurant specials with event wristbands.
Start Up Downtown was a positive, enriching event, and FloridaWorks is excited to be a part of our region’s startup community. FloridaWorks is dedicated to entrepreneurship and innovation. For more information on future events, please join our newsletter.
