Russ Furnas Celebrated for Dedicated Service with FloridaWorks Business Services

Russell Furnas, 92, has worked diligently for FloridaWorks as part of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) for the past four years. However, his tenure has come to a close this week. Staff commemorated him and his valuable contributions by sharing stories of praise, presenting a plaque of recognition, and expressing bitter-but-sweet sentiments and well wishes. Russ is currently looking for future employment and hopes to continue to similar work and continuing his passion of helping others.

“My experience here has been wonderful. Four years, and it went by very, very quickly. Time flies when you are having fun,” stated Russ.

Russ has a plethora of experience and infinite wisdom to impart. In his younger years, Russ won four district championships and was runner-up for the State championship in Golden Gloves boxing. He worked on a river boat in Alaska, several factory jobs in Michigan, and volunteered for the army in 1943. After joining the infantry and completing basic training, he was sent overseas and fought and was injured in the invasion of Normandy. He returned home, where he continued taking classes at Jackson Community College and worked his way up to a Quality Control Engineer and earned a Professional Engineer’s license.

15 years later, he retired and returned to Gainesville, Florida, fulfilling his vow of many years ago. Since then, he has worked as an independent Quality Control Consultant, volunteered teaching English at the International Learning Center and has now worked at FloridaWorks through SCSEP.

Through his myriad work experiences, Russ has cultivated a diverse, skill set and amiable personality making every interaction a pleasant one. Russ has no plans to retire and continues to search for his next job.  “I plan to look for work, because I like to be youthful. I don’t like to sit and do nothing,” states Russ.

“I will take this experience with me wherever I go, and will bestow the virtues of the people of FloridaWorks and the Chamber of Commerce.”

FloridaWorks is an equal opportunity employer/program.
