According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) press release, Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.3% percent in May 2024, up 0% from the April 2024 rate and up 0.5% from a year ago. In total, 24 states had unemployment rates lower than the U.S. figure of 4.0%, four states and the District had higher rates, and 22 states had rates that were not appreciably different from those of the nation.

Unemployment Rates Among the Ten Largest States
- Florida had the second-lowest unemployment rate (3.3 percent)
- Georgia had the lowest unemployment rate (3.2 percent)
- California had the highest unemployment rate (5.2 percent)
North Central Florida Area’s Employment Growth
The unemployment rate in Alachua and Bradford counties was 3.2% in May 2024. This rate was 0.3% greater than the region’s year-ago rate of 2.9%. Additionally, the region’s May 2024 unemployment rate was 0.2% above Florida’s state rate of 3.3%. The labor force was 153,898, up 134 (+0.1%) over the year. There were 4,894 unemployed residents in the region.
