New SNAP Requirements for ABAWDS

Update to Walk-In Assistance Effective April 11, 2016

To help reduce wait times at our Gainesville and Starke career centers, SNAP recipients will now be seen on Mondays and Fridays at the Gainesville career center and Mondays only at the Starke career center.

For customers who need the use of a computer to complete online services to maintain their eligibility, the Gainesville career center is making an additional ten computers available by reservation only for use for two-hour blocks.

Customers may reserve computers from 1-3 p.m. or 3-5 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays in advance by calling (352) 955-2245 or in-person at the front desk (based on availability).

Per CareerSource NCFL policy, children will not be allowed in the computer lab with the ten additional computers and are not allowed at the Gainesville or Starke career centers prior to 3 p.m. If visiting after 3 p.m., please make arrangements accordingly to have children supervised by an adult in the waiting area.

Instructions to Maintain Food Assistance Eligibility

Effective January 1, Florida’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), often referred to as Food Stamps, requires that all Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDS), age 18-49, must participate in the SNAP Employment & Training (E&T) program. (Read these Frequently Asked Questions for more information about SNAP and the ABAWD status).

The goal of the SNAP E&T program is to help unemployed recipients of food assistance benefits find work. In Alachua and Bradford counties, CareerSource North Central Florida oversees the E&T program in partnership with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO).

If you are required to participate, you will receive a Notification of Mandatory Participation Letter from DEO. Once you have been referred to SNAP E&T, you must complete the following two (2) steps to maintain eligibility for food assistance.

Step 1 – Complete Online Training Modules

Online training modules are designed to help SNAP E&T participants learn about the program, get matched with available services and sharpen job-search skills. Completion deadlines are based on the referral date on your notification letter.

  • Online Orientation – Complete within 10 calendar days of your referral date
  • Online Assessment – Complete within 10 calendar days of your referral date
  • Online Job Search Training – Complete within 30 calendar days of your referral date

If you need assistance with accessing the Internet or using a computer, please visit your nearest CareerSource North Central Florida career center to complete the required modules.

Step 2 – Attend a Required Compliance Session

After you have completed the online training modules, you must attend an in-person group session. CareerSource North Central Florida will send you an appointment letter with a scheduled time to attend the group session within five (5) calendar days of online module completion. These mandatory sessions are designed to help you maintain eligibility by:

  • Providing more information about the SNAP E&T program,
  • Assigning one or more mandatory activities for 80 hours each month (20 hours a week)
  • Meeting SNAP staff members to address additional questions.

For your convenience, group sessions are scheduled in Alachua and Bradford counties at the Gainesville and Starke career centers respectively. Group sessions are held unless we are closed for a county holiday.

Alachua County: Tuesdays at 2 p.m. at the Gainesville career center | 10 NW 6th Street

Bradford County: Thursdays at 2 p.m. at the Starke career center | 819 S Walnut Street

In order to maintain eligibility for food-assistance benefits, Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDS) must complete 20 hours of work-related activity each week.
