H-1B Ready to Work Grant: Regional Workforce Boards 5, 9 and 11

What is STEM Ready?

STEM Ready is a five-year $10-million U.S. Department of Labor grant-funded program providing training, internships and job placement assistance in STEM careers in the Gainesville, Tallahassee and Daytona regions. Long-term unemployed and underemployed participants are engaged in career pathways through mentorship by business leadership.

Employers provide real-world experience, enhancing the skills of the participant, for up to 12 weeks of paid internship where participants earn valuable work skills in a STEM occupation – all at no cost to the employer or worker. In the rapidly changing STEM work environment, STEM Ready’s goal is to connect 600 workers to growing STEM employers.

Background: In October 2014, DOL awarded a $10-million grant to CareerSource NCFL to help individuals return to work through STEM Ready. The grant is one of the highest awarded as part of the H-1B Ready to Work Partnership by the DOL, Employment and Training Administration. STEM Ready is a partnership of three CareerSource Florida boards covering seven counties: Alachua, Bradford, Gadsden, Leon, Wakulla, Flagler and Volusia. The project includes Extreme Employer Engagement, a new initiative focused on direct coaching, training and mentoring of potential candidates from business leadership operating in STEM occupations.
