With the holiday season quickly approaching, retailers are gearing up for their busiest time of the year. While the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing for Shop GNV 2012, an extension of last year’s Black Thursday that encourages member businesses to offer deals and holiday specials to the community between Nov. 15 to Nov. 18, FloridaWorks, the Chamber’s official workforce partner, is helping to connect job seekers to retailers located within the Oaks Mall at the upcoming holiday hiring job fair.
On Tuesday, Nov. 13, FloridaWorks will be connecting job seekers with retailers at the Oaks Mall in the Dillard’s Pavilion as well as restaurants within the mall’s food court about temporary job opportunities that will be opening up during this holiday season. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., employers will be providing information about what job positions they are hiring for as well as descriptions of job qualifications. On-site interviews may be conducted the day of the job fair depending on the employer. Retailers will only be interviewing for temporary positions.
In addition, FloridaWorks will be registering job seekers in the Employ Florida Marketplace, Florida’s job database system, to ensure that job seekers remain connected with other opportunities in the community and with the FloridaWorks’ staff even after holiday hiring.
In September, FloridaWorks participated in the Gainesville Job Fair that attracted 1,200 job seekers. Over 55 employers were in attendance to fill open positions throughout the community. Some of the companies in attendance were Alachua County Public Schools, City College, Comfort Keepers, Gainesville Regional Airport, The ARC of Alachua County, Inc., Info Tech, Inc. and more.
Holly Hanna, Human Resources Manager from Macy’s, stated at the Gainesville Job Fair that Macy’s participated to increase applicant flow and hire for the holiday season. Her experience as an employer at the September fair left her satisfied with the amount of traffic and caliber of candidates enough so that she expressed interest to participate in additional job fairs around the community. After listening to the needs of employers like Macy’s, FloridaWorks was quick to respond to their needs and decided to host a seasonal fair.
